Repeated Hamas Mistakes Doesn’t Serve Conciliation

Fadi Abu Sada – Since the bloody fighting started between Hamas and Fatah movements in the Gaza Strip, talks about reconciliation have occurred as well. Moreover, the reconciliation were supposed to include all Palestinians due to what happened during the infighting in Gaza, but since then, the Hamas movement has gotten tougher in its demands and raised the bar for the conciliation to happen.

The demands are very noticeable during the narratives in the Hamas controlled media, as well as the statements of its leaders. We see Hamas talk as if everyone else is responsible for the stumbling of the reconciliation process and that they are the only ones who want the reconciliation. This makes you believe the general consensus that people have towards Hamas, which is that its agenda doesn’t necessarily serve Palestine, but rather expand to align more with regional agendas.

As soon as the Israeli attack on the flotilla in international waters to break the siege on Gaza happened it drew worldwide condemnation and more sympathy to the Palestinian cause as well as those besieged in Gaza. Something else happened, in that the talk about Palestinian national reconciliation came back heavily. That was very obvious during the latest visit by Amr Moussa, General Secretary of the Arab league to the Gaza Strip.

Reconciliation between both parties was Mr. Moussa main purpose on his visit. Moussa met the deposed Palestinian Prime Minister of Hamas Ismail Hanyaa more than once during his in time in Gaza and even talked to him via phone on several occasions after he left Gaza.

As usual, the Hamas movement thought that world sympathy is with the movement and not with the people of Gaza as human beings. Therefore it insisted its increase and demands for a national reconciliation to take place.

This is not the first time that Hamas thinks the international support is for its own agenda or for the incompetent way its running Gaza. In addition to its possessive mentality and its militarized style, it tries to show us that they are the only supporters of democracy and demand elections.

Oddly, Hamas knows that anybody who wants to win the support of the world for its agenda and movement must prove that it’s using the right way of ruling and guiding the country. That includes stopping political arrests, and ending the prosecuting of Fatah members and leaders in Gaza. Hamas knows that this kind of behavior went further to reach top leaders in the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).

Those who want to win support of the Palestinian people must stop blaming everything that is not done their way on others. They should also stop smuggling along the borders that is harming everyone in Gaza. They should stop thinking of Gaza as the lone Palestinian state because we are still here in the West Bank, and we are still under occupation on a daily basis.

Hamas, you are the ones who need the support of the international community and not vice versa. Therefore you have to stop playing the political game. This means that a lot of your politics and media narratives should be change and at the same time change the way you treat your fellow countrymen.

You must know that you are not our enemies, but our brothers once you prove to us that you are not only seeking power. Prove to us that you are truly a political and a resistant faction aimed against ending the occupation. We don’t need more internal division because what has had happened to Palestinians in the past is more than enough for us to handle.
